Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part II - Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment

What it is:

MOC points awarded by the University of Michigan Medical school for participating in accredited educational and/or self-assessment CME activities. The ABMS Boards currently allowing CME providers to designate CME activities for Part II MOC are the American Board of Anesthesiology (any accredited CME activity), the American Board of Internal Medicine (accredited CME activity with a self-assessment component), or the American Board of Pediatrics (accredited CME activity with a self-assessment component).

Who needs it:

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board-certified physicians – for recertification

Requirements:

Most certifying boards require participation in CME activities to meet MOC Part II requirements for lifelong learning and self-assessment of knowledge. Boards vary in specific requirements for self-assessment, the number of CME credits, and frequency. Please check the ABMS website for specific requirements.

The option of documenting Part II MOC through Michigan Medicine is useful for Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics. Other Boards provide options that may more easily meet the Part II MOC requirements of those Boards.

Who awards it:

Office of Continuing Medical Education & Lifelong Learning

Through a collaboration between the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the ABA, the ABIM, and the ABPeds, our Office is able to offer accredited CME that meets the Part II requirements for these boards. We submit activity and participant completion data to the ACCME, which forwards the information directly to these boards.

Participating Boards and Activity Types:

  • American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) – Any type of activity (e.g., regularly scheduled series, courses, enduring materials) designated for AMA PRA Category 1™ credit is accepted by the ABA for Part II MOC points.
  • American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) - Live activities (e.g., courses, internet live courses, or regularly scheduled series) and enduring materials (e.g., online CME, monograph, DVD) designated for AMA PRA Category 1™ credit are accepted by the ABIM for Part II MOC points. Part II MOC points are not available for performance improvement activities.
  • American Board of Pediatrics (ABPeds) - Live activities (e.g., courses, internet live courses, or regularly scheduled series) and enduring materials (e.g., online CME, monograph, DVD) designated for AMA PRA Category 1™ credit are accepted by the ABPeds for Part II MOC points. Part II MOC points are not available for performance improvement activities and some other types of learning.
