Description:
Rhinosinusitis is common and accounts for up to 5% of visits to primary care physicians. However, studies indicate that it is not always accurately diagnosed and that adequate trials of antibiotic therapy may not occur for bacterial rhinosinusitis. This self-study activity provides practical guidance to primary care clinicians concerning key aspects of care for rhinosinusitis and implementing that care into practice.

- Diagnosis, including how to estimate the probability of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis
- Treatment decisions regarding prescribing antibiotic and ancillary therapies
- Antibiotic selection
- Effective radiological imaging
- Appropriate subspecialist consultation
The 2011 update of the guideline includes:
- Estimate the probability of acute bacterial sinusitis expanded to include symptom duration
- Updated antibiotic choices grouped into first line, alternative first line, and second line
- Updated information on options and effectiveness of adjuvant therapies
Educational Objectives:
Participants in this CME activity will understand and be able to implement evidence-based cost-effective clinical strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of acute rhinosinusitis in adults.

This self-study activity is appropriate for primary care clinicians and other health care providers involved in the diagnosis and treatment of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis in adults.
