Description: Appropriate prenatal care improves maternal and fetal health, reduces maternal mortality and morbidity and fetal loss, and reduces preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, congenital abnormalities, and failure to thrive. This CME activity synthesizes recommendations for prenatal care based on scientific evidence, recommendations of the U.S. Public Health Service, clinical judgment regarding effectiveness of identifying and modifying risk, and the success of medical and psychological interventions.

Prenatal care involves the following three basic components:
  1. Early and continuing risk assessment
  2. Health promotion
  3. Medical and psychosocial interventions and follow-up

These components are addressed over a chronological sequence of prenatal care visits:
  • Preconception care
  • Prenatal visits
  • Delivery planning
  • Postpartum assessment

Additional information is presented on topics that may be relevant at any time:
  • Indications for referral to a high-risk provider
  • Cultural sensitivity
Educational Objectives: Participants in this CME activity will understand and be able to implement evidence-based cost-effective clinical strategies for optimal prenatal care for fetal and maternal health and how to implement those recommendations in routine care.
Target Audience: This self-study activity is appropriate for primary care clinicians and other health care providers providing prenatal care.
Accreditation and Credit Designation: The University of Michigan Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
