Description: In general, physicians support confidential care for adolescent patients, but have knowledge gaps around Michigan's minor consent laws. Confidential care may also be difficult to provide in a busy ambulatory care setting with parents present. This self-study activity is designed to help physicians and health center staff understand and apply the laws and best practices in the provision of confidential care to adolescents.

Adolescents cite confidentiality as one of the key determinants in their use of healthcare. This self-study module is designed to address this critical factor in caring for adolescents. It should take approximately 30 minutes to complete, and there is no fee to participate.
Educational Objectives: For providers and staff to understand and apply Michigan's legal protections and legal limitations for minor adolescent patients seeking confidential health care. This includes being able to:
  • Identify healthcare issues for which a minor patient can seek treatment without the consent or knowledge of his or her parent/guardian.
  • Recognize the legal limits of this confidential care and explain when minor confidentiality can and will be broken.
  • Advise minor patients seeking confidential care that if they are using their parent/guardian insurance to pay for the services than an explanation of benefits (EOB) may be sent to their parent/guardian's from the insurance company disclosing the care received.
  • Foster a patient care environment where minor patients can seek care confidentially when needed, while encouraging open communciations between patients and parents/guardians.
Target Audience: This self-study activity is appropriate for providers and health center staff that work with adolescent patients.
