Description: Most unintentional injuries to children are blunt. The abdominal solid organs in a child such as the kidney, liver, spleen and pancreas are particularly vulnerable to injury. Fortunately most children can be managed without an operation if clinically stable. This approach was pioneered in children and has led to a dramatic change in practice in adult patients regarding management of solid organ injury. In this trauma newsletter we will review some of the key principles and research in treating children who have suffered a solid organ injury. Today almost 95% of blunt solid organ injuries can be managed without surgery.
