Educational Objectives

At the end of this activity, participant should be able to:
  1. Understand that opioid use disorder is a medical illness and identify differences between dependence and addiction.
  2. Identify the differences between medications for opioid use disorder and implement strategies to treat the disorder.
  3. Describe and address the indications, dosing algorithms, potential complications, and components of successful buprenorphine administration and referral system in the emergency department.
  4. Manage acute pain for patients with opioid use disorder.
  5. Understand and implement harm reduction strategies from the emergency department, including rationale and evidence for community naloxone distribution.
  6. Describe, utilize and act according to the legal and regulatory consideration related to buprenorphine prescribing.
